Montmorency cherry
Montmorency cherries are one of the few known food sources of melatonin. Melatonin, which is a natural compound produced in the brain’s pineal gland, controls the body’s natural sleep cycles and circadian rhythms.
Studies have shown that many insomniacs have low levels of circulating melatonin, which may be a cause, or contributor, to their sleep problems.
A study from Northumbria University showed that participants taking Montmorency cherry (as a juice) had significant improvements in the quantity and quality of their sleep.
Lavender
A systematic review by the journal of menopausal medication looked at the effectiveness of lavender (in powder and aromatherapy forms) on menopausal and elderly women.
The results showed a significant improvement in quality of sleep and relaxation in the population studied.
Chamomile
A systematic review and meta-analysis from the Phytotherapy Research Center showed a significant improvement in sleep quality after chamomile administration.
Magnesium
The journal of research in medical sciences studied the efficacy of magnesium supplementation to improve insomnia in the elderly.
The conclusion was that supplementation of magnesium appears to improve subjective measures of insomnia such as ISI score,
sleep efficiency, sleep time and sleep onset latency, early morning awakening, and likewise, insomnia objective measures
such as concentration of serum renin, melatonin, and serum cortisol in the population studied.
